Cleft Gate Hurdle

Once upon a time long before the advent of portable electric fencing, hurdles were handmade and produced en masse. They were used as portable fencing to fold sheep. Traditionally made from coppiced ash you will learn the art of cleaving various components using a froe and cleaving brake. At the end of the day you’ll have a mini gate hurdle to take home. 

Skills covered: 

  • Select suitable ash for cleaving 

  • Split ash poles tangentially and radially using a froe and cleaving break to make the various parts  (headers and rails) of the gate. 

  • Using mortise and tenon joints assemble the gate hurdle
